Saved Games
I downloaded Culture Shock from GameTAP, and I would like to know where my saved games are stored.

Samnmax221 01-27-2007 03:09 AM

Probably on Gametap's server. As far as I know everyone here either opted into a full season or gets Pre-release review versions.

Murray the Chao 01-27-2007 03:12 AM

So, how do I get to them?

Samnmax221 01-27-2007 03:24 AM

IDK, you could try using Gametap's Tech Support.

Murray the Chao 01-28-2007 10:05 PM

I'm pretty sure they're on the hard drive somewhere.

Samnmax221 01-28-2007 10:24 PM

It should be in the Sam and Max folder in your Program Files.

Murray the Chao 01-28-2007 11:34 PM

I don't have a Sam & Max folder since I downloaded Culture Shock from GameTap.

Samnmax221 01-29-2007 12:15 AM

Is there a Gametap folder? Maybe you should ask Jake.

Murray the Chao 01-29-2007 01:59 AM

Yes, there is a GameTap folder, but it doesn't contain any game data.

Ray Jones 01-29-2007 03:24 AM

Just search for files with an actual timestamp after you saved a game?

Murray the Chao 01-29-2007 03:33 AM

I tried that earlier today.

Murray the Chao 01-29-2007 04:32 AM

I found nothing.

Ray Jones 01-29-2007 04:47 AM

Maybe it's stored in the registry.

Murray the Chao 01-29-2007 05:53 AM

I've already checked.

Besides, I have heard that the extension is .save

Ray Jones 01-29-2007 06:26 AM

Check if it's stored in "thar web". Just cut your internet cable in half and burn it to be really sure. Then try to save a game. If it still works, it has to be on the harddisk. I hope you didn't search for *.save files only, eh? (Yes, I could say
"maybe you're just too stupid or something" instead, but this way it is more fun!)

Murray the Chao 01-30-2007 07:57 PM

I was able to save a game with the Internet cut off.

Murray the Chao 02-02-2007 01:48 AM

Ray Jones 02-02-2007 09:01 AM

Send me money, so I can actually buy the game to err investigate further?

Hm. Did you search for modified, created or accessed files?

Murray the Chao 02-03-2007 03:49 AM

Just tried that, no go.

SyntheticGerbil 02-03-2007 11:28 AM

So why didn't you try e-mailing Gametap about this?

Murray the Chao 02-04-2007 12:10 AM

My father did E-Mail them, and they weren't very helpful.

itchythesamurai 02-04-2007 02:54 AM

Well then, they're not going to be getting my business! And that's because I already ordered the whole of season one in advance from Telltale.

Murray the Chao 02-04-2007 05:12 AM

They were saying copyright issues, but how can saved games be copyrighted?

SyntheticGerbil 02-04-2007 11:10 AM

They can't. And I think legally a company is required to tell you what files they put on your computer, assuming that you are saving to your harddrive or registry and not the internet.

itchythesamurai 02-04-2007 02:35 PM

Murry, are you going to hire a crackerjack attorney and bring GameTap to justice?

Samnmax221 02-04-2007 02:46 PM

Lets chase down Ted Turner and shove napalm up his expensive ass!!!

itchythesamurai 02-04-2007 03:32 PM

I'm sorry, we're just no match against Captain Planet.

I don't have any plans to, but if this matter cannot be resolved, I will be giving Phoenix Wright a call!

Samnmax221 02-05-2007 01:13 AM

Should call Johnnie Cochran, wait, he's dead.

Murray the Chao 02-05-2007 05:32 AM

Okay, I have looked into this some more, and found that when you launch a game from GameTap, two virtual drives are created: one at X, where the game data(including saved games)is stored, and one at Y, for the CD in games that use one.
These drives do not appear in the Explorer, and if I try to access them in another application(such as DRAGON UnPacker or Hex Workshop)I get "Access is Denied".

Copy protection may be required to keep GameTap from becoming a piracy haven, but it is NOT okay when it prevents you from accessing your saved games(either to back them up, or to copy over one you got from somewhere else).

SyntheticGerbil 02-05-2007 11:24 AM

Gametap sounds stupid. Just buy from Telltale. And if you want to play Incredible Machine Contraptions, it's like 3 bucks on Amazon.

Murray the Chao 02-05-2007 07:33 PM

I am going to start getting Sam & Max straight from Telltale, I just need to be able to back up my Culture Shock saved games first.

SyntheticGerbil 02-05-2007 08:11 PM

I wonder if the saves are different on Gametap though?

I'm sure Telltale doesn't hide secret "copyright" saved games on protected hard drives that get temporarily created on your PC.

Samnmax221 02-05-2007 08:16 PM

My saves are stored right in my Telltale folder, well not exactly, they're stored in a Data folder inside of the Telltale folder.
