That's an interesting question. I must admit, I never thought about that. Been a while since I played TSL :P.
To be completely blunt, we couldn't care less. :P You can play as anyone you want - even the Handmaiden. This kind of thing is why God created ret-con. We can write Handmaiden in somehow, I'm sure. Pick who you want.
