COMI "unable to load resource\font0.nut"

I'm trying to run curse of monkey island under windows 2000.

I keep getting this message:

"unable to load resource\font0.nut"

Also during installation, it makes me try and install directx 5.0 (I have 9.0). A menu pops up saying it's been successfully installed, but the direct3d entry above reads "not installed".

How do I install direct 3d?

Are both problems related?

If CMI insists on trying to install an old version of directx before it will run (then failing and not running) try creating a blank .txt file, naming it DDHELP.EXE and placing it in the windows/system32/ folder.
