I had a feeling is was Pratchett, but the name Jonathan Kellerman in the background threw me.
I've only read Colour of Magic, so I'm not the biggest Pratchett fan, but I've been persuaded to try him again. But after exams.

Colour of Magic isn't his best. An author's first book rarely is.
Actually, I have a very strange habit of not liking a Terry Pratchett book the first time I've read it. Month's later, I'll read it again and find it's actually quite good.
