Yeah I do pretty much the same thing as you I still like to keep a few in my main fleet. Since their pop cost is lower then a VSD, you get access to more free fighters (until I can get a better ISD and VSD combo). Usually though, I keep them on planets that need little defense so they can put up some decent resistance against invaders.
I find that Acclamators are still useful in later stages, particularly since they have proton torpedo (and concussion missile) launchers. Always nice for targetting the Rebel ships' shield generators...

Uhm - it's not? Both the VSD's and the Acclamator's pop in space is 3 - which is also why they truly are pretty useless once you reach lvl 2 - I use the to defend unimportant planets or to blockade rebel planets beofre blowing them up with the DS
