Just found, and finished KotOR. Then read more and got bummed out.

So I am waaayyy late to this party. I realise that. And what I am going to say will have been said a thousand times before. But humour me.

I am a big Bioware fan since Baldur's Gate, but missed out on kotor. Don't know how. Bought it two weeks ago. Played it. Loved it.

I saw no Revan in kotor2, so I thought oh well, that is the end of the story. But it was a great story.

Then I heard what happened in the novel Revan, and TOR. That really bummed me out. I don't mind sad endings in books, movies, etc. But when it felt like he/she was your character to create as you see fit, make choices for, leave in a galaxy far, far away, and then you just get told "oh yeah, after you finished the game everything got really bad. Sorry" it just feels wrong!

Anyway on the grand scale of things this is not a biggie, I realise that, but it still it left a sour taste goddamnit and I wanted to vent! This is the first time in any medium I am going to seek refuge in fan-fiction! (PS Anyone know any good fan-fiction? Or any other ways to drown out the depressing canon?!).

You're right, this isn't the first time someone has shared your opinion about it. However, I don't mind reading your vent and I'm sure others won't as well. I didn't even bother reading the book when I heard what was going to happen and I still to this day have no desire to ever play TOR.

Oh yes, I feel you. When you play KotOR, Revan isn't some distant character, Revan is you; you are Revan. The novel completely changes that. It's as if one day you stop living your life, and you see some other bum in your body making decisions for you and living what your future was supposed to be - only, that fool screws you over. Really disappointing.

Not going to read the novel because it does mess over the only character in the KotOR or TSL that was my character, but it has nothing to do with Revan. The main character in KotOR was never my own character, it was Revan, some wannabe sith lord. My character never would have traveled the road of the darkside. So the novel does nothing to mess up my idea of Revan, because Revan was a bioware creation and premade, cookie cutter, cliché PC, may as well played Halo as a RPG. Exile on the other hand was my character, her motivations were my own, and what did I get for it, a lightsaber in the back.

Your loss. On my forth character and other than a few nods to KotOR and TSL, there really isn't much about Revan outside of a couple flashpoints. The Jedi Knight has a bit more and a moment that really annoyed me in a companion discussion, but beyond that and two flashpoints Revan really isn't a issue. More like a after thought, which is the way it should be.

Read the book awhile back. It was readable. Knew Revan wasn't going to live forever, Exile either, but they did kind of go out lamely. Doesn't affect how I feel about the game/s, though. Don't worry about venting, bitching or whinging.....a lot of that goes on here regularly.

As to RPGs in general, our control is a bit like this intro from an old sci-fi series:

We basically control that character for a set period. What its creators do after that is out of our hands.

Yeah, I have no interest in TOR or the book either. I am just going to stick my fingers in my ears and pretend I never heard of them.

I see your point, it is out of hands. But I don't like it.

I view it more like CptPriceless - characters you have RPed you get attached to (at least I do) in ways that don't happen with other media. Introducing terrible ends - only two years after you went out on a high - makes me sad.

But, as I said, I think head-canon is the way to go for me.

Well, I feel the same way: I wanted a bit more personal, KotOR III-ish ending to the Revan/Exile arc. TOR doesn't interest me unless I can finagle the time and finance to play my first MMO... not likely, and neither does "Revan" with its TOR-prequel ending bull**** (second hand info of course). And now I feel like if there's more KotOR, it'll be after TOR timeline-wise. Not really an issue for me as it would be a good way to circumvent the lore from that game into something more (personally) playable.

It's kind of like all that juicy restored content in TSLRCM not being canon, none of the cool alternate KotOR II realities happened in the official timeline (which in no way detracts from the experience of it, but still sucks).

I sympathize. Problem with canon is that everyone seems to have their own and it's often in conflict with the official version.

I guess if you stick to the first two, there'll be no need for the third.

Is the TSLRCM good? I was deciding whether or not to get Kotor2. I will be honest - the amount of canon is putting me off. The Exile seems to have gotten shafted as bad, or worse, than Revan.

(Even without any shafting, I think canon for RPGs should be as rare as possible).

There is only so much "Hear no Evil" I can take!

One of the best parts about KOTOR 2 was the dialogue options you have for the Exile.

In the first KOTOR, your dialogue choices were just "who are you?", "why?", "what should we do now?", "What happened to your mother?" etc...

In KOTOR 2, some of the dialogue choices were 2 or 3 sentences long, like "How can anyone let Revan leave, letting someone of that importance just walk away and disappear? What is wrong with you people?" etc... and you would also be presented with 6 or 7 dialogue options at the same time, which was just awesome.

Especially the parts where you talk to Atris and Atton, I felt that I was having an argument with an in-game character. It was more fun than most boss battles I've fought.

I also overall enjoyed the richness and cool factor of the Exile's character as opposed to Revan, I'd say the deep grey area detail and fantasy style Star Wars storytelling in TSL win it over for me as one of my favorite games of all time.

The Exile became too much like Atris for my taste. When I played as the Exile, I always felt as though (s)he was cool, calm, relaxed, and not as... serious; (s)he felt more laid back.
