As stated before, Arndt is writing the screenplay adapted from what Lucas has written which makes him more important than Lucas. Lucas is a guide, but both Arndt and Abrams (if the rumours are true) are going to be key in making this successful.

I'm not arguing their importance (although I think story is as much, or even more, important as screenplay).
I'm just saying they are dependable on the story that Lucas wrote. Nothing more.

And I'm saying that even if Lucas wrote the greatest story ever written but it makes no difference if Arndt and Abrams don't do a good job at translating it into a movie.
Alternatively, Lucas could write the worst story ever told and Arndt and Abrams could make something awesome out of it.
It's more on them than it is on Lucas. Lucas is just a guide in this...
The story for movies aren't written like novels, which is why the screenplay in movies matters quite a lot.

I have more trust in him than I do in BioWare making decent games any longer, with plots that don't come across like they've been written by a six year old.

As long as they keep m-effing Damon Lindelof far away from the script, I don't have too much of a problem with Abrams directing, though there are certainly better choices out there.
If they don't, then this project is doomed from the start.

It's Official...
Official Statement from Abrams, Kennedy and Lucas -
Its Official! JJ Abrams WILL Direct Star Wars Episode VII

Although it also says that Abrams is still committed to Paramount for a third Trek movie (though not necessarily as director). Could be interesting...

It also says in the article Kasdan will be consulting (so he's involved even before he gets into Episode VIII), so that's a plus.
Abrams doing both Star Wars and Star Trek... I think the universe is collapsing into itself. But if he manages to make a succesful Star Wars movie, he will have revitalized perhaps the two biggest sci-fi franchises in just a few years.

Got to laugh at "TPM bombed". It got $100 million (how is this possible? everyone hates the prequels, right?), the conversion costed 1/10 of that, but it bombed...

Yeah, I didn't care for the 3D either, but since I never watched the OT on theaters I was pretty damn excited. Still am, if they're still going to be released.

Standalone Star Wars movies confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger.
Quote:
|
Theres been speculation about some standalone films that are in development, and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films. Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. So we still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8 and 9 roughly over a six-year period of time, starting 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too.
|
This week, rumors hinted at a Yoda movie being planned, while not too long ago, there were whispers of Zack Snyder being brought in to create a Star Wars standalone movie heavily influenced by Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. Whether either rumor bears any truth or Disney has something else in mind, we'll have to wait and see. But "great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga" can be interpreted quite broadly. As the article at Screenrant suggests, this could go from relatively minor movie characters to popular characters from other media.

A movie about Yoda, a movie about Boba Fett and a movie about Vader and Sidious would be sweet.
Especially Vader, one of the coolest characters ever. James Earl Jones in Star Wars sells tickets, he won't be in the sequel trilogy, so why not use him in between Episode III and IV when Jedi Knights were being hunted down?

I say hell yes! I love Star Wars. As long as Lucas doesn't write the screenplay or direct and the likes of Gayden Christensen and other tween adored wooden ****ers stay away from them, one Star Wars film a year would be great - at least for me it would be.

Disney really are planning on wringing out their 4 billion's worth.
I guess a Boba movie is absolutely a lock. Beyond that, I wouldn't be surprised to see a movie or two focused on one or more of Zahn's characters, most likely Mara Jade and/or Talon Karrde, given their popularity in the EU. And no doubt Samuel L. Jackson would be quite keen on a Windu-centric movie.

Hahaha. Clint as Boba, make it happen Disney.
I can't believe they aren't doing a Darth Vader spin-off, set between Episode III and IV.

Doing a Vader spinoff would probably do more damage than anything else. It's one of those characters you want to use the least because it would diminish his presence as a character on the Original Trilogy every second he's on screen in anything else.

True.
I also think it wouldn't hurt to move on from the time period set between episodes III and IV.

Yeah I suppose. You could say the same about Han Solo, though, especially since they might cast someone who'll tarnish his character (i.e. Hayden Christensen ruining young Vader).
A young Yoda film, set hundreds of years before the films would've been sweet.
This guy needs to be Han Solo in the spin-off:

Doing topical Star Wars films as cash grabs as a whole will most likely do more bad than anything else too...
I'm sure we'll get to the stage (if we haven't already) where people are like "Oh... another Star Wars movie, whatever, let's go see something else."

I like that kind of ruining, I mean, enhancing. Still, I don't see the interest in an Han Solo movie without Harrison Ford in his 30's. But hey, people asked for it...

Me neither until I saw Anthony Ingruber's impression, not to mention the guy looks like a young Harrison Ford. He's got a lot of potential. Needs to work on his voice and being forced with the expressions, but if he can tweak that, he should be young Han and not any other well known actor you can think of.
I'm not at that Star Wars burnout stage myself, but I'm a Star Wars fan so probably never will be. Most people aren't into it as much as I am, though, so I can see why they'd feel differently. Still, I'm way more excited about the new trilogy because we have a good director, good writers, no Hayden Christensen and no one knows what's going to happen unlike the prequels.

This, and its applicable for the whole franchise... I'm a Star Wars FREAK, But it still needs to be a massive event when we get a Star Wars film, I don't want us to get so many that its waters down Star Wars on the big screen, like the EU and TCW tends to do to themselves. Quality not Quantity.

My dad is interested in seeing ep 7. He was interested in AOTC when it was in theaters but has never even made a move to even try to watch ep 3. He has seen the all important last part of mustafar on TV. He was all like, "Oh, so THAT's why he wears that suit and mask."
It's a crap chute at this point. We don't really know what's going to happen. Guess as we may.
