skinning question - symmetry
Is it possible to reskin a head - in this case Carth - without the symmetry? Like, make one eye a different color than the other?

Actually, you can edit the UV map on the head, which isn't hard coding. It's a bit complex, and you'll have to do a lot of texture editing, but it's possible.

So theoretically editing the uv map on the head one could create an eye patch for a model? Just been an idea I've had kicking around in my head (as I'm sure many other people have as well).

It would look really bad, trust me. It would be better to make a mask that only fits a specific head.

"uv map?"
 ???
Is that the same as the regular texture? And if so, or even if not, how do I go about doing that?

Alright, let me explain. In a model, you have to have something that tells the texture how to go on it. A UV map's like a picture of how your model looks all unfolded when it's flat. When the dev's made KotOR, they took one side of the face of the UV map, and flipped it on top of the other side, to save on work. When the UV map is finished, it's like a skeleton of what the final texture will look like. Then, the UV map is rendered, and you'd use it to make a texture. What you'd have to do is change the UV map in a model editing program and then move the stuff in the texture around to fit it. It's some work, but it can be pulled off.

Well, 3DS Max would be best, but it costs $$$$$. GMAx will work for what you're doing, though. You'll also need NWMax, MDLOps, and Taina's Replacer (maybe).

By the way, there's a pretty good tutorial about UV Mapping (Done by oldFlash) found here. Just a note: this is made with the assumption that you know the program's basics.

perfect, thanks.
Now, this one will be probably a HUUUUGE stretch...*gulp*
My comp crashed the other day... >.< I was barely able to recover the stuff on my hard drive, including the mod I'm working on. Now I'm limited to a mac laptop...blech. Don't suppose any of these programs would work on a mac until I get a new PC?

Aww man, did your computer crash too? Mine did as well a week or two ago, except my computer was OK, just it wiped my whole hard drive and everything on it.
Back on topic, they might work, it's worth a try anyway.

@Vox Kalam
I don't suppose you have a dual boot setup with XP on that Mac?
Otherwise I don't think you can run *.exe's on the Mac OS.

Gmax is free. All the other stuff is free as well.
Edit: I mean that MDLOps, NWMax, and Taina's Replacer are free.

Blender is also free, as is Milkshape. Personally, as weird as it sounds, I actually prefer Blender out of all the free ones. Maybe it's just because I learned it first...
But if you can get it, 3DS is a very sexy app.

The only problem with Blender is that it doesn't have a toolset for NeverWinter Nights and KotOR. But, you can export as a 3ds into GMax.
Yes, 3DS Max is awesome...

What version of Mac OS do you have? If you have OS X, then you might be able to use Boot Camp. That would allow you to install Windows and run it separately (that's what I do, and it works great). The other option is running windows through Parallels. There's a lot more to it than I can explain here, so check out some websites for info. Hope that helps 'till you get a new Windows PC.
As for the symmetry, there are plenty of uvw mapping tutorials on the Skinning and Modeling page. My favourite thread to start looking for info is by T7nowhere.
