Your favourite FPS?
There have been hundreds of 'em, across just about every console, covering everything from Star Wars to real-world armed forces, but what is your all time favourite, and why?
For me, it's a toss-up between Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2. Why?
-modern era setting;
-adaptive AI
-CoD4 - SAS!
-R6 - masses to unlock.
Over to you!

Descent. Although it's over ten years old, this game is still boss. Basically, you were a space ship, and you went inside mines within asteroids trying to destroy rogue mining droids (Hm...this sounds familiar, doesn't it? Peragus II anyone?) and detonate the mine's nuclear reactor and evacuate the mine before the reactor overloads. This game was also one of the first games to allow a full six degrees of freedom when moving around, and it was one of the first games to have fully 3D rendered levels and enemies, which was something that Doom didn't have. You also had the best looking sci-fi fighter craft: the Pyro GX.
Try to beat that Master Chief!

Hmm...
Dues Ex (The first, as I haven't played the second...)
Halo 2 (better then 1, and I haven't played 3)
Not sure if Mercenaries: Playground of destruction is an FPS or an TPS (Third Person Shooter)

Since I have played almost no FPS's, I'm very limited in my choice. I'd have to say Day of Defeat, with Republic Commando as second and Call of Duty as third.

JK1. Hey, if JK2 counts as an FPS, then so does JK1. MOTS too, while we're at it.

I'm not certain that Deus Ex can be counted as a shooter. It's kind of in it's own cateory; the Deus Ex category.
I'd like to throw some lesser knowns into the ring for consideration.
Darkwatch. GREAT fps that was overlooked by many. Sure the story is a little wonky but who cares when the gameplay can melt your face? If you love shooters as much as I do, treat yourself to this game.
Undying. The scariest game I've ever played. Great weapons, geat characters, great story. The only bad thing is the last three minutes, actually.

I'd have to say Half-Life wins the tie between Halo and Call of Duty. There's just so many awesome mods.

I am really surprised that no-one has mentioned Doom! I have never played it myself, but I was under the impression that it was quite popular.
What about Killzone? Parts of that were WILD shootouts, balanced with a fair amount of sneaking and sniping. I played that, and I played Halo - Killzone was far superior!
Why has no-one mentioned Medal of Honour?

Because lately they have been quite horrible. Allied Assault is still the best.
I don't like sci-fi FPSs, for many reasons, so my favorites have always been the Medal of Honor series and Call of Duty series.

Well... I'm also kinda limited in my choices....
Half-life (Series): This game has everything! Story, decent graphics (For it's day, and areas where you just have to move through and kill everything. One of the few games that makes me afraid to have my feet below the desk whilst playing. (Who here hates headcrabs?)
MoHAA: I mean, you get to fight on Omaha Beech in the first wave of D-Day! That's awesome. For that reason (and others) this game is on the list...
Doom: Eh.... I don't play it that often. And, it's not that good... But, I figure that it deserves a place on this list just for being Doom.
Call of Duty (1&2): 3 and 4 bite. But, these are pretty fun. I especially enjoy the first one, but throwing potato grenades in the second is also fun. But, I have a question, am I the only person that will throw away a Thompson in favor of a M1?

There you go, Rabish Bini!
I agree with you on the Thompson/M1 issue - I hide and take well-aimed shots rather than charge in all guns blazing, so the M1 works better.
On MoH, I liked Frontline, if only for the Normandy landing - near impossible to beat on highest difficulty! (I like challenges. )

Absolutely bloody not, ForeverNight. Though the Thompson is excellent, the M1 does take the cake with accuracy and the fact you can fire off that 8 round clip pretty damn fast. It's always good to have a Thompson as your secondary though.

I do in CoD 2, the thompson blows in that game.
And I agree with MoHAA up to the sniper mission. After that it just gets absurdly difficult. I like having difficulty in my games. I dont like having to face snipers that require suciding your self to find, so you can reload and attempt to kill them. I especially don't like when there is an entire town filled with these snipers.

Ghost Recon series. GRAW 2 ftw.
Battle is a pure form of expression. It is heart and discipline, reduced to movement and motion. In battle, the words are swept away, giving way to actions-- mercy, sacrifice, anger, fear. These are pure moments of expression.

Only ever played a short demo of Republic Commando, but it was very good. As for CoD, I wasn't too fond of the Second World War versions, but Modern Warfare had to be one of the best.

The Half-Life series and all its various mods will rule the FPS genre as long as Valve survives. If we had to declare a ruler over the FPS, it would have to be Valve.
Things like Halo, Call of duty series, etc are fun and I've played all of them, but don't compare them to the Half-Life series.

I played a demo of GRAW, and it is as Ghost Recon as rainbow six vegas is rainbow six. And I that I mean its not at all ghost recon, its just a twitch shooter with a few tactical gimmicks thrown in for giggles.

Yes however this was after Ubicrap bought out Red Storm Entertainment. Ubicrap then proceeded to made both Tactical Shooter series (Ghost Recon (outdoor) & Rainbow 6 (indoor)) into games for the button mashing ADHD console kiddies. The last game in the series that I bought was Raven Shield. When I couldn't control my teammates in the game I knew it would be my last game purchased from Ubicrap except for good sims like the il-2 series.
Under RSE = great slow paced Tactical Shooters.
Under Ubicrap = fast paced FPS with very limited Tactical control.

nobody has mentioned Gears of War because its a Third person shooter, not a First Person Shooter.
for me, Crysis tops my list. some people are quick to point out that the game isn't playable on a system that isn't uber-god like, but that's simply not the case. game requirement issues aside, Crysis has some of the best gameplay of any game ever. attacking an enemy-held strongpoint has never had this kind of open world and on-the-fly tactics. you can attack the strongpoint depending entirely on your own situation whether you need a stealthy approach to outflank and outwit the excellent AI or whether you want to just run in guns blazing. then, you can shift between these tactics on the fly thanks to the seamless armor modes on the nanosuit.
my only complaints with this game is that vehicles feel a little weak, and once you get past the human enemies, the game does become quite a bit more linear. despite that, the game is just a blast to play, and the combination of eye candy and ground breaking physics just adds to the experience. the sound design is also extremely well done as the voice acting, sound fx, and the music are all top notch.
if you haven't played this one yet because you're worried about high system requirements, don't worry too much. the game still looks amazing on medium settings, and it still matches most games graphically on low settings. its quite a bit cheaper now, too, so that's just a bonus.

Yeah I know you kiddies think its like old or something, but it was da' shiznit back in da day! First game I used mods on and I still have some of em... Doom Control Center and hundreds of maps (my favorite was a map called BigCity).
