Well, I'm stumped.

Our hardware is very similar and I have no problems getting either game to run on it, so there's no reason why it shouldn't run on yours.

Theoretically, could I get it to run without all this rigmarole on a computer with XP and an nVidia GeForce 8600 GT or would I still have the issue with resolution?

ETA: Okay, now the desktop shortcut has that blue and yellow shield on it. It never had that before. -_-
ETA2: Oh, wait. I've read that Win XP compatibility mode only 'exists' for Win 7 Pro or higher. Is this true? It could certainly explain why I can't get it to work (since I have the Home edition).

You're talking about that XP mode that Pro has that is actually a form of virtual machine. That's not what we're dealing with, here. I have Home Premium 64 as well.

With that XP machine you could install and patch it normally. You'd just have to do the Dantooine lag fix and set FullScreen=1 in the swkotor.ini file and set CPU core affinity every time you launch the game if it has a multicore CPU.

THank you very much for all of your help. :-)

As one final option before resorting to using an entirely different tower, I don't suppose you'd happen to know anything about whether I can install KotOR onto a virtual machine (or install it here and run it on there)? I do have an XP VM installed so I can play an old DOS game.

Usually VMs don't allow the use of higher-level driver functions like those used by video drivers, so no. I'd try installing KotOR on your XP machine. That 8600GT should run the game just fine.

So after much fiddling around and re-installing and following your guide... Mine still wouldn't run properly. I finally figured out how to make it run.. but it doesn't make much sense. For some reason my game seems unaffected by anything I manually put into the .ini file.. fullscreen set to 1 or 0 does nothing.. setting the resolution does nothing. In game settings will stay set though and show up properly in the .ini. Anyway to get mine to run I have to alt tab out during the Lucas Arts start up screen.. If I don't the game will crash to desktop but stay running in that frozen crashed state as if it's playing.. Once I alt tab back into the game the bioware screen will pop up.. it'll keep going until the New/Load game screen and then be in some amazingly strange resolution where all I can see is the top left of the screen and a little bit of Maleks head.. I then press alt-tab again and the screen will correct itself to the 1200 x 1024 res. I had tried the widescreen patch earlier and it just doesn't seem to work with 1600x900 res... so I gave up on that. I"m just glad to have it running at all. I really have no idea if any of your stuff helped or if I had installed normally and just alt-tabbed out in the first place everything would have worked. But thanks at least for providing instructions that kept me trying long enough to discover the alt-tab thing.

^Just out of curiosity, what type of video card does your computer have?

^ ATI Radeon 4650. HP-Pavilion..win-7
This is my first pre-manufactured computer and I've never had an ATI before.. I've had quite a bit of problems getting older games to run well with it. I'm used to nvidia and like their cards better. But I got this computer as a gift and it is better than my old computer so I shouldn't really complain.

Edit: Felt like fiddling some more even though I said I wouldn't. Decided to install everything directly to C: drive.. no sub folders. Everything seems to work great... No having to replace the mss.dll or securirom thing/no administration privileges, no running in xp compatibility .... Kotor 1 can start windowed and Kotor 2 has absolutely no problems... yet. I'll have to play awhile to see if there are any crashes but so far so good.

Hey, this is my first post on this thread. I picked up KOTOR from Direct2Drive for my new computer. I have fully updated drivers and a gaming pc that can max this game easy. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. I was having a few weird errors during my first few plays, but then it stopped working after the lucasarts screen. I uninstalled and reinstalled (which with downloading takes forever) and it worked again.

Then today it dind't work at all, which makes me very mad cuz I loved this game on Xbox and idk if I can go back to xbox after seeing how much better it is on PC.

Anyway, I have been running it in Windows service pack 2 XP all day and it wasn't working at all. I gets placed in the background after freezing and I have to log off to remove it. I tried running through the steps and deleted mss32.dll, but I can't find a legit copy of mss32.dll anywhere (my games are too new to have them on this, I searched), I downloaded a copy of mss32 from some website and put it in, but it didn't work at all. I need a legit copy of mss32 from somewhere I think.

Now when I start it with this janky mss32, the game runs fine.... except I have no sound.

All help is truly appreciated

Hello, I've been trying to figure this problem out for a good while now.. I downloaded this off of a torrent a month or two back and couldn't get it to work, so I decided to just buy the game at Target last night and see what happened (KOTOR 2).

I followed the installation guide and it didn't work, so I've been fidgeting around with the specs and I've finally had enough.

Evil Q, If you can help me solve this problem I would appreciate it more than you know.

I've got an Intel HD Graphics video card, I think this has something to do with my "Flipping Policy to Blip" issue that some have. My problem is that when I get to the 3D Options panel on my video card control panel, there is no option for flipping policy. I've uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it like some said and it just installed the same thing I had.. I hope that helps in solving the problem..

Thanks!

The newer Intel graphics drivers don't have that option.

You need to go into swkotor2.ini and set Fullscreen=1 under both [Display Options] and [Graphics Options]. You also need to put the Dantooine lag fix (Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1) under [Graphics Options].

It didn't work..

I'm going to do a clean reinstall, I had been screwing around with everything. I'll get back to you in about 15-30 minutes.

Thanks for your help.

I just don't know what is going on.. KOTOR worked fine on my computer yet KOTOR 2 is just having all sorts of problems. Anymore input you have would be extremely appreciated although I'm close to just giving up.

^I would contact D2D. They've made changes to some of the game files that I can't account for (Steam did the same thing), all in the name of getting the game to run on Vista/7, and it's their responsibility to get the game to run on a modern OS.

KotOR2's a real bitch sometimes. Try going back into that .ini file and changing the Width and Height values to 1280 and 768 respectively under both [Display Options] and [Graphics Options]. Also try running the game with V-sync on.

D2D has AWFUL customer service and won't respond to any of my open tickets. I just bought it on Steam as well. Sad part is, I have an Xbox version and a PC version back at my parents house. I now own 4 different copies of this game...

These are the fixes from the official Steam forums. I have a feeling they work.

I found another solution.
I simply rename the three startup movies (they are not necessary, aren't they ?)
biologo.bik, leclogo.bik and legal.bik into biologo.bik.old, etc...

No special manip, no windowed mode, and all my cinematics work perfectly : no more crash !

Try this.

You guys are welcome. The first fix may not be needed if the second one works

OK, I need to get a hold of one of cheap, up to date Intel laptop and see if I can get these games to run on it. I have a 3 year old one that runs them just fine, but these newer ones don't and I can't figure out why without having one to play around with.

I was wondering if i could get some help with my knights of the old republic game. I used to be able to play this game quite well on windows vista, but was forced to reformat my laptop to windows 7 and now neither kotor or kotor2 will play. The game installs perfectly fine, but when i get to the main screen the screen flashes like a strobe light and the character models are completely messed up, the eyes will be on one side of the screen while other parts of the body will be flipped inside out and spread around the rest of the screen. During an actual game these same problems persist.

These are the specs for my system:
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.100618-1621)
Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: TOSHIBA
System Model: Satellite A215
BIOS: Ver 1.00PARTTBL
Processor: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 (2 CPUs), ~2.0GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 1918MB RAM
Page File: 1548MB used, 2287MB available
Windows Dir: C:\Windows
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
Card name: ATI Radeon X1200 Series
Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
Chip type: ATI Radeon X1200 Series (0x791F)

I have tried to update my video card drivers by using the automatic installer and even downloaded the catalyst manager for ati radeon x1200 and it didn't fix it. Any help would be appreciated

Did you install the game according to the large-print instructions at the top of the second post in this thread?

That said, ATI's newer drivers will not work properly, and since the only drivers available for Windows 7 are only a year old, you're going to have to hold off on playing a game until you can find a fix.

Try googling it every once in a while. You'll be likely to find it on an ATI-themed forum.

Here is my setup I have a toshiba satellite L355-S7915
Processor: 2.2GHz Intel Celeron 900
Memory: 3GB DDR2
Storage: 250GB hard drive
Optical Drive: DVD±RW
Screen: 17 inches (1,440x900 native resolution)
Graphics: Integrated Intel GMA 4500M
Weight: 6.9 pounds
Dimensions (HWD): 1.7x15.7x11.5 inches
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit
and whenever I install kotor 2 just after the beginning credits it crashes on me.
I Installed the fix and its set right and everything but it wont work.
And Kotor 1 works fine on my laptop w/o a fix the only problems i've had are.
The grass script issue(just turned off grass) and it wont go completely full screen. Its not windowed but its not full screen either. But thats a minor inconvenience really. I Would appreciate help with kotor 2 and the screen issue for 1 please thanks

Hmmmm

Hey guys,

I've recently dusted Kotor2 Off from it's hiding place, and I've attempted to install it on my new machine, a windows 7 64-bit platform. Well When I first tried it I had no dice. I then googled it and stumbled onto this. I tried the fix in bold on the second post of this thread, but the result is much the same.

I'm not sure it's the same as all of you, as you all seem to have been able to at least partially play it. When I try to launch it, I get the standard "I'm thinking" icon on my pc, and then after a few moments it stops and nothing happens. Trying to relaunch it doesn't even do that because when you go into task manager you can see that the process is running, but you can't actually do anything with it in my experience.

Now this thread was 12 pages and I skimmed most of it but did not see anything similar to it. I hope I'm not missing something like a noob >.< but any help on this would be most appreciated D: I want to play my game again.

Aye, I've done every suggestion, replacing the Dll. Replacing the .exe with the secu-rom thing. And installing and running it in compatibility mode... Nothing works

Direct X up-to-date?

Doing every suggestion is good, but doing them in their specific order is crucial.

Locutus, would you please post your config stats, or your swkotor2.ini, or both, so we can be more helpful.

Tried fix and still won't run.

I'm running Vista 32 and tried to apply the fix in the second post here twice. Essentially, the game starts after a very long delay where I am looking at a black screen. I generally take this opportunity to set the affinity. After this the opening credits display, there is another decent delay, and then I can start a new game. After I create a character, the screen goes black, then displays my desktop. That's it. It never actually crashes or displays a (not responding) in the task manager as if it froze. It just never does anything else. I'm at a loss and ready to give up, which means it's either something easy that I'll feel stupid when it's fixed or I won't be playing this old game any time soon.

Ok, three things stand out.
1- Not sure if I have ever seen a failure in the OS portion of the specs report.... have you updated your Vista to current day? Have you run the DirectX Runtime Installer to fill in your missing pieces of DX9.dlls?
2- Your driver for your Video Card is a fail... and has funny things in it... have you downloaded and installed the latest drivers from nVidia?
3- I see no Dantooine Lag Fix, so I wonder if you did all of the instructions for proper installation. There are a lot of them.

I find it odd it says win xp... but that might because I hit it up in compatibility mode. I am currently running a win 7 machine. And as for the video drivers. I've no clue how they could be out of date considering I just updated them last week.

I've updated DirectX as in EDIT #2, then followed Astro's instructions through running setup.exe. The game is installed and I was about to move on, but the install is asking "You appear to have DirectX 9.0b or newer installed." Do I continue installing 9.0b or ignore it like the recommendation?

I'm on this step now.

--4) Remove the "Read-Only" property from the entire game folder (default location: C:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR). Right-click on the folder, select "Properties", deselect "Read-Only", hit "Apply", select "Apply changes to this folder, subfolders and files" and hit OK.--

After completing this step, I check the properties again, and it has been reset to read-only. Has anyone come across this yet?

Edit: And yes, after un-checking the "read-only" box, I click apply, then ok. When I go back to properties to double check that it has changed, "read-only" is highlighted once more.

I guess I'm an idiot. I don't know how to use this 7z program. I can't figure out how to extract (or whatever) the mss32.dll file. I don't even know if that file is part of the 7z file I downloaded. Help!!

I did find an older version of the mss32.dll file on my portable hard drive. I originally downloaded it in 2005. Will it still work?

Heyho!
At first, sry that I will not read all the 12 pages of this thread to find out, that none of the posted problems really fit mine and that none of the several solutions will work for me ... I've tried all the standard solutions you posted in the first few posts already without any sign of success ... if there is already a solution that will work for me somewere in that mass, please just let me know ;-)

So what is my problem? When I start the game KotOR (1!) (if per launcher or per direct link doesn't matter to the effect), I come to see the Lucas Arts Logo as it should be, full size in fullscreen, but then in most times I try, the Bioware Logo comes in smaller size in the upper right quater of the screen. Then, if the previously described phenomenon comes to happen or not, the same may happen to the third introscreen, or sometimes the game minimizes to desktop and doesn't (usually) allow me to maximize it. However, if anything of the previous described happens (and that is in ~90% of the times I try to start the game) and I have the pleasure to reach the game's main menu, the mouse and the keyboard do not respond in any way for the game, except that I can move the courser (but I don't get a mouse-over effect on the buttons). All I can do then is to shut the process in my taskmanager.

I have installed the 4 CD version and patched to 1.03. I run the game in 1280 x 1024.

My Hardware is set up as follows:
- Quadcore Processor
- Windows 7 64-bit
- ATI Radeon HD4850
- Enough Ram

I have tried the following solutions without success:
- Run the game in XP Compability Mode (through all my tests)
- Run the game as an administrator (also all the time, because no UAC active)
- Deactivate AERO and all the other compability options (except for 640x480 and 256 colors ^^)
- Use the Mss32.dll and the securom-exe as discribed in post 2
- Apply the ini-fix (Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1) (which is unlilkely to do anything to that ...)
- Install the DX 9 Setup, so that DX 9 libs are present on the system
- Change the process priority slightly to "higher than normal" and try to set the process to only one of my processor cores (which required my to minimize the game to the given result ...)
- Update Keyboard and Mouse drivers (have already been up to date)
- Start the game directly by double clicking the swkotor.exe
- torture google with any possible combination of words I could think of being useful to find an answer a whole afternoon
- reinstall the game and try all the things again
- restart my computer
- wait a day
- shout and curse

The few times I happend to have access to the main menu I started a game and played up to the slums in four sessions with only one single crash of the game, where it got stuck in loading an area and was forced to quit by windows without further notice. But that is nor what I worry about at the moment. Except of this single crash everything went perfectly normal, even without any other of the solutions given above than running the game in XP compability.

By the way: KotOR 2 TSL runns neat and smoothly without ANY afford other than to install the game.

I'm starting to get very confused about all this and beg your help if anyone of you has an idea what I could try to solve my problem, because I am starting to like the game itself very much.

PS: Sry if my english is a bit buggy, but i try my best, though I am not a native speaker ;-)

This is bizarre. TSL plays nice and KotOR is the problem!?!?!?!?! That's a first, and I wonder if you have damaged media? That 4 CD set is old, old my friend (I have one too, but I now play off the BoPC version).

Not sure what to say, generally KotOR is much simpler to get going than TSL. I would recommend trying to update your driver, or roll-back your driver, as I have the same Vid Card (GTS 250) and for whatever reason, I have no FAIL on the driver report. My other thought is bad VRAM, although you aren't complaining of ghosting or weird pixellation artifacts.
