Hey people...let's hope this thread isn't quite dead yet... :-S Anyway...here's my system specs...where my graphics card lists (null), It's a Intel Cantiga, or Mobile Series 4 integrated (POS) card.

Heh, let's hope someone can decipher a solution from this...It says I'm running XP...guess it's because I've got this whole deal set to compatibility mode...I'm really running Vista 32-bit home.
:-S I have, and I get the exact same message as before..."An error has caused SWKOTOR2 to stop working, blah blah blah" So...I don't know what I can do...call LucasArts and get replacement discs? I don't want to do that if I don't have to...heh, I'm broke, and so unless it's like a $2 fee.. :P Anyway, if you can help, great, if not, well, I'll just keep poking around myself and see what I can do. Thanks again!
EDIT: I just thought of something--KOTOR 1 works fine on my computer, no modifications needed...dunno if that's significant or not
The reason I asked is that I can tell from your swconfig report that you haven't done the Dantooine lag fix, and Fullscreen needs to =1 under both "Display Options" and "Graphics Options".
"Mind your wants, 'cause someone wants your mind."
Oh...heh, sorry...didn't think that actually had anything to do with the game itself crashing, considering I can't even get past the opening crawl. Will re-try now. Thanks.
EDIT: Got it! Sorta...I'm still tinkering to perfect it...but so far I've seen gameplay! What I've had to do is undo the read-only mode of the folder, subfolders, and files of the entire KOTOR 2 folder, I set it clear back to Win95 compatibility mode, I'm running as administrator, I've disabled visual themes, disabled desktop composition, and disabled display scaling. Like I said, I'm gonna tinker, because while I've seen a game, A) it's only been once, and B) it didn't give me an opening movie or anything...just straight to my character.
EDIT#2: So here's the problem. I still don't have a solution, but this may be beneficial for future tinkerers with more technical knowledge than I. The bug lies somewhere within the first CG cutscene (which I still haven't seen yet). Anyway, I know this because if I set compatibility mode up to XP, or simply above Win95, it'll try and display cutscenes like the opening crawl, etc, which work fine...but then when it goes to CG, it dies. If I set the compatibility mode down to Win95...no cutscene, and then the game works fine. Laggy, but fine. I figure I can save and then re-load...see what happens. Like I said I hope this helps somebody to get some sort of official, rather than cobbled-together fix like this out there.

Everything is supposed to be set to XP SP2 compatibility mode, including setup.exe when you install the game. Did you:
1) Update DirectX
2) Patch the game
3) Replace the mss32.dll with the one fixed for Vista
4) Replace the swkotor2.exe with the one updated by SecuROM
5) Do the Dantooine lag fix
6) Set your Intel graphics driver's flipping policy to "blit"
7) Set CPU affinity to a single core in Task Manager every time you launch the game
That's just off the top of my head. If you missed any one of these the game won't run right.

Hello, I've just installed Kotor 2 on Windows 7 and I can't make it work. When I launch the game, I have a black screen just after the video, no main menu or nothing, and all I can do is reboot my computer.
I try the installation as explained in the first page and the nvidia fixes mentioned there but no change. I think the problem come from my graphics card because if I launch Kotor 2 with the Intel chipset it work (until I decided to create a character and begin a game...then it crashes of course)
Anyway here is my specs, if you have any idea... I had no problem for Kotor 1, installed a few day ago.

I suspect your problem is the null driver for your GT335M. I would recommend cleaning up, using DriverSweeper or some similar program to clean out any old nVidia driver remnants, then installing freshly the latest nVidia driver from their website.
Chances are, if you have actually installed things correctly, that this will solve your problems. Remember though, you will need to manually set the core affinity (through Task Manager) for the game, every single time you play it.

Thanks a lot, it works !

don't replace your discs or anything, this is a simple fix it tends to happen on online games like GUNZ , but in some cases it does happen on discs.
its is caused by a patch file compatibility issue either with the actual game, edited file ( in this case probably that ) or a .dll . Its happened before and what has happened is this
1. u did all the stuff in the second post
2. u patched the game and it interfered with something
3. S*it started :0
the fix ( a few solutions/ideas )
1. do a complete reinstall
2. uninstall directX ( don't reinstall until after you reinstall the game ) if it asked you in the install proses say yes, then download the latest verision ( they will run alongside each other ).
3. If you have tried everything possible i have nothing to say but contact the manufacturer(s) / developers / costumer support / or return the game from where you got it and get it checked
NOTE: save the patch, run it in compatibility mode with win xp sp2 and as admin.
Hey everyone I was wondering if someone could help me out. I have an Intel GMA 4500M and I've read all the directions and followed everything for installing. My only problem is that I can't find the option to change my flipping policy. I have the latest drivers and my driver control thing looks like this:
If anyone knows how to change the flipping policy with the latest (or any version of the drivers that have the new "updated" options panel) I would really appreciate it.
Hi,
I hope it is ok to post in this thread! I've been having major problems trying to get SWKOTOR to work with Windows 7 64 Bit. I've followed the large-print instructions on the first page to the letter, however I still get varying problems. Sometimes I can play for a good 30 minutes or so before a graphic glitch happens, sometimes I can see flickering on the menu screen which generally means theres problems instantly.
I've attached the log from the launcher. It says that my graphics card fails, but I have tried with various versions of the 64bit drivers - 186.18, 197.45, 258.96 using driver cleaner and cc cleaner each time. I've tried putting all graphics setting to the lowest and using the nvidia control center to set my settings, but each method just eventually results in the same conclusion - graphics glitches crashing the game. This is the first time I've played this game and I would love to complete it, but this has now become more than frustrating!
Please help me
ps I have been seeting the affinity to use only 1 core also, not sure why only 1gb of ram is found in the launcher, I have 4, and all showing fine in dxdiag.
You shouldn't have to set CPU affinity with Windows 7; it's done automatically. I'm using Windows 7 HP x64 and Nvidia's 258.96 drivers. Here's my swinfo.txt for comparison (well, at least the important stuff):

I should have explained this is KOTOR 1, updated with the 1.03 in 1st post and also with the .exe, I'll try replicating your settings once I get in from work, thanks.
I tried to do the method described in the first two posts... twice. The first time I managed to get the game to create a character, play the starting movie, see a couple seconds of droid rebooting, and then crash. Now the game crashes right after the movie, but I can still hear the droid. Can anyone help?
This is my graphics card, as it's the only thing that didn't get the green light from the hardware scan:
Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
I've turned the graphics down all the way, and followed all the instructions. What's wrong?!?!?
I'm having problems too with Windows 7, if anyone still reads this thread. Game will crash on me within about 3 minutes. I open the game, go through the tutorial, and it dies when I get to the corridor with the Sith Troopers on the Endor Spire.
I've followed the steps line by line with the Best of the PC KOTOR
EDIT: It seems W7 keeps adding the "Read Only" attribute to my folder -- is there a way to take that off and keep it that way?
I bought KOTOR2 many years ago and it ran fine on my old XP computer. I dug out my copy of the game today and installed it on my newer vista machine.
I am trying to follow the instructions on getting it to work, but the link for the mss32.dll file does not work anymore. AFAIK the mss32.dll file I need to download is a specific version or it won't work properly, and it's to do with the sound in the game? I got it to run fine with the sound disabled, but I don't want to play with no sound.... :-\
Well...it's working perfectly on windows 7...with the exception of the fact that it just plain refuses to work in fullscreen mode without those ridiculous and jarring black bars. >_<

Oops. I'm so used to dealing with TSL issues that I didn't even notice. People usually have less trouble getting KotOR1 to run on Vista/7, so hopefully you figured out what was wrong and got it to run OK.

Lots of eople have been having problems with that particular Intel GPU (GMA 4500) for a while, now, and I'm pretty sure that it's driver-related. If you can't set the flipping policy to "blit" with your current drivers, you'll have to roll back to an older version that has the option to do so.

You shouldn't have to do any of that. Both of the links to the updated executables in the second post of this thread still work. Just download whichever one you need from there.

Yeah, my Windows 7 does the same thing. As long as you're sure that you've removed it, the read-only attribute should still be gone even if it says that it isn't. If you followed the installation instructions in the second post of this thread correctly, your crashing problem is most likely hardware-related. Try using the game's configuration utility to post your system specs:

Bring up the launcher menu for Kotor 1 or 2.
Click on "Configure".
Click the "Scan Hardware" button on the lower center of the window.
Click "Yes" to continue.
Click "Details" to view your system specs.
Click "Save Report" and save the file to your desktop.
Whenever you post your problem, open the file you just saved and copy and paste the contents to your post.

KotOR2? Try opening swkotor2.ini with notepad and set FullScreen=1 under both [Display Options] and [Graphics Options].
"Mind your wants, 'cause someone wants your mind."
That flipping policy setting can be changed to "blit" by clicking on "3D Settings" in the main Intel driver settings menu. The option should be there. Sorry that I didn't post this earlier, but I only got KotOR 2 installed on my cheap laptop which has an Intel GPU last night. Hopefully you'll see this and be able to get it to work like I did.
Blit? I can't get that option. I get some 3D settings it its mostly for quality and filtering. I don't have any Blit option at all. Suckage
LOL
I just loaded up some save games and apparently all of them load except the auto first save. /headdesk
Fabulous. Now I'm stuck playing a male. Oh well. /sighs.
It seems I spoke too soon. It broke again. /sighs
Dang it.
Edit: LOL it seems that Pergasus, Telos and Endgame break but everything else works fine. I have no clue why that happens. /sighs

I've tried everything listed here and nothing is working. I installed the game following all of the steps but nothing is working. The game crashes after the first cutscene and gives me trouble.
I'm running a Vista Home Premium 32 bit laptop
It has an Intel Pentium Dual Core
It's a whole chipset family, the laptop runs mainly off of intel. I don't get it, I can run games bigger than KOTOR 2 on this laptop and yet KOTOR 2 is the trouble maker. Hey I can even run Warcraft 2 on this computer (if that isn't old enough to prove old games can be run on newer systems then idk what is lol)
I read somewhere that there is a way to tricking your game into thinking it's running on the correct video card since it doesn't like Intel, but how would you do that?
I just got my game working by doing almost nothing but reinstalling the game. All I did was follow the guidelines up to updating the game, and adding in the movie and music patches and the affinity tributes along with running the game in compatibility mode. It worked like a charm!
