Right, Freespace 2, but it should be a standalone release..Anyone who got some talent in modding, creating 3D Models, texturing and stuff like that should join them really..

That is definitely not I...
But I'll play it when it's ready, for sure.

Zarg, the Freespace 2 source code has been open-source for quite a while, which means it can also be modified to take advantage of today's hardware.

yes, technically.
I don't really see someone making it look as nice the crysis or Unreal 3 engine however.

the upgraded MediaVP's for FS2 opensource engine are actually very nice, and they keep adding to it all the time. This is one way for X Wing to live on.

Unfortunately the Fate of the Galaxy Mod for FS 2 had a set back as one of the main modders lost his HD and all the models therein..but they seem to have surived this (i hope he has an extrnal back up or atleat on on DVD now)
and they are proceeding, prob be until later this year for first release, they have an alpha built but most of the ships are placeholders at this point, so there is a lot of work ahead of them, but the models finished so far do look quite good. To find out if it will run on latest systems, i would advise checking with the Hard Light Productions main forum they will know there.

The VegaStrike engine is open source and pretty nice.

Then again, Beyond the Red Line is built on a modified Freespace 2 engine, and it looks pretty nifty.

That being said, while I'd enjoy a mega-pretty X-Wing title built on open source, I'd be quite happy with an open source engine that can support the existing bevy of X-Wing Alliance models. You can always replace those later with nicer models and nicer textures, but I assume you'll be at a playable state quicker if you can use all the existing models the fan community has made.
