I think they're a good idea - and it's great the community can nominate people for badges too.

I would like to know the difference between a Forum veteran and 10 year Veteran, and why got one and not the other.
Unlike these here young wipper snappers I couldn't care less about these new fangled gadgets on the intertubes when I was quite happy with the only complex gadget i had at home was a washing machine, sure beats cleaning them on stones near the river

How do you exactly get these things?
To be honest, it shifts some balance. Who judges if someone is helpful or not? Or who's funny or not? Or who makes sure all fan fic winners get their badge (me wants dammit! Beauty and the Wookiee!  ).
Despite that issue, it pimps out the profile though.
