LOTRO updates

For those of you that play, Book 8 has some crafting changes in store (news is here). It looks to generally be for the better, though it looks like it might change some of the game economy with the changes in level reqs for various items, weapons, and armors.

Yeah they overhaul LOTRO crafting system but totally ignore further implementation of ours over at DDO (We don't really have one yet)... as was promised us a year ago.

But at least someone somewhere are getting new 'revised' toys to play with.

I bet some of the Powergamers cries about some of the changes are epic!

I'm betting they'll gripe, we all do every time there's a major change.

Some of those toys are getting leveled down, so I expect to hear cries about the 'economy' and such.

As long as there is some logic to the changes I don't gripe, but there are some that logic does indeed not cover, then let the griping and moaning begin. (I am a Powergamer, I really don't know how it happened but it did... I feel so dirty admitting that! )

The only crafting we have apart from one raid, that you can only farm ingredients for the items in said raid too, is about 5 recipes that we can add onto an item... and they really don't add much, +1 AC or +1 Force dam type things onto existing items. That's it!

No creating items or even being able to tweak the looks of, nothing.

Well... some can argue we have 'craftable' armor too called Dragon-Touched Armor... but it isn't 'crafting' it is a one armed bandit... you have an unidentified rune you get as 'bound' loot you place it and the armor/robe into an alter and hit the button to see what the property is... it sucks! Makes me really sad... and it makes the game look like Attack of the Clones.

After listening to a couple LucasCasts - I somehow knew you would be the creator of this thread :P

The logic was to make the crafting level progression a little more even instead of having big jumps between the levels at which you can use things, such as going from level 17 to level 35--they're spreading it out a little more. That in general makes sense to me.

There is a HUGE crafting component to LOTRO--you could spend hours just crafting if that's what you wanted to do, and some do just that. There are 6 different crafting levels, each of which makes better stuff than the last. You can make anything you need--armor, shields, weapons, food (which serves as short-term buffs or heals), jewellry, scrolls that help in battle, items for your house, etc. Recipes for crafting these items are part of the monster drops. Some of the best items in game are still the very highest monster drops, but once someone reaches the highest tier crafting level, they can make some very nice items that are nearly equivalent to the best boss drops. Now, they still have to kill monsters to get some of the crafting components to make those things, but it's doable

Ugh. That is bad. Guild Wars has no crafting component whatsoever other than making your armor more pretty and putting 2 weapon upgrades on a weapon, so I understand that, but the really good items can be farmed by killing certain bosses, so they make it up that way.

Yeah, I think Turbine stiffed you guys in that regard. They need to work on that for you. Or you can come play with us on LOTRO, in addition to your DDO hours.

Actually, Bob Lion is the resident LOTRO junkie--he's the one who got me involved in it, so you're more likely to see him have something substantial to say about it. He has a lot more experience with the game than I do.

No it does to me too... just I know the Powergamers love their "Wine"!

Yeah I heard that, and to add fuel to my 'fire' we were promised one over a year ago... we got nada. Just what I described above.

Heck we haven't gotten an update to our content for 9+ months now. And after all that time it appears we gare getting some nerfs (some needed some not, and the needed ones were badly implemented *Red takes a sip of his 'wine'*) a single new raid and 4 new quests to level up our 4 levels so we can go from 16-20.

But now Turbine is having some sort of legal issues with DDO and the new mod has been delayed even more... players are leaving too being bored. Sad.

I would if I could stand the combat system, I can't in the WOW clone MMO's because it is lackluster and tedious heck you could run your char with a script (if you were clever enough)... go to sleep and see what you got after a good 8 hrs of rest. (Disclaimer: I haven't tried LOTRO myself this information is from feedback from those that have I have played with in DDO, and learned from the DDO forums. I have tried WOW and that is what it was for me so call me tainted.)

I'm a FPS player, and DDO is FPS combat, I enjoy jumping around swinging weapons at monsters, using the terrain features, doing the Ranger archery circle of death (Kiting), and the Caster CC 'Daffy Duck' imitation (Jumping around in the CC like Daffy does in the cartoons evading enemy attacks whilst burning them with your CC spells). That really sucked me in... but it certainly isn't for everyone, as we do clearly have 2 kinds of players ones that love the system and those that don't and play it like other MMOS' for a while once you get in the levels 6+ you have to adjust and some can't take it. Some can't adapt and move on or those that like the game or other reasons stick with it and get better, and that may doom my MMO because people sometimes do choose to move on.

This is not to start an 'my MMO is better than yours' topic folks so don't go there, but just what sucked me into the one I play, I'm not saying what you all like is inferior or something (Judging from the MMO's like WOW that are making it people do like that kind of game), just it simply doesn't interest me personally.

Also I'm jealous of the crafting you guys in LOTRO are getting/have... I admit it. But you don't have teh sexah Drow hotties!

No worries--there are a lot of MMOs out there, and I think different MMOs meet different players' needs, so I can't claim one is better than another. The best one is the one you enjoy playing the most yourself. I'm happy with turn-based (or semi-turn based) and trying to figure out which skills work best in a given situation without having to worry too much about all the other stuff, so DDO would probably seem like more work to me in combat than enjoyment, but it sounds like a lot of fun for those who are very creative in combat.

Legal action with DDO is a Bad Sign for the game. The fact that Turbine is pouring all the resources into LOTRO and almost nothing for DDO I think is also a bad sign.

I think that too, but there have been hints that it might be some licensing thing, as D&D has quite a few 'rights holders' with so many hands feeding from the table that it isn't funny, methinks they are diverting funds to fight some of these rights holders... their devs can't comment but they have said walls are breaking down.

So hopefully they will get through this and our staff will increase, WotC, Atari, Hasbro, someone is being a jerk here and not letting things progress. Hence why DDO hasn't been advertised or developed fully, an issue that has the Dev's stymied too. Hopefully this is it and the game can grow, but we'll see.

@ Jae that small disclaimer was not really for you but for those that would come here and possibly react to what I said as like a my MMO is better than yours thing.

Linky, because Googling "lotro trial" is such a tedious pain for any average person.

Gads, that sounds complicated.

I see it advertised in some gaming magazines but not to the degree LOTRO is.

Start a character on Brandywine server where my kinship is at, or on Silverlode where Bob Lion's kin is at, though the kinship I'm in on Brandywine is a lot more active. We can't add you to the kinship while you're on a trial account, but we can when you get the membership. There's a special on memberships right now so you're coming in at a good time. I bought the lifetime membership--I've played Guild Wars for nearly 2 years, and I figure I'll play this one a good year or more, so a lifetime membership will save me money in the long run, and I don't have to feel pressured to get my 'monthly fee's worth'. Some months I've played a lot, some months not so much because of the writing class I was taking.

There are a good number of different servers--I don't know if they're region-locked or not, however. I think they're not--one of our kin members is from Scotland.

The best place to go to is www.lotro.com for help. The customer support section here may help. The forums tab has an entire section for hardward/game problems. Also, turn off xfire, any unnecessary background processes, and anything like bittorrent or utorrent (I'm going to assume for legal downloads of course, people). I found when I loaded the game through xfire, the framerate was horrible. Go to the options section and turn down all your graphics options and then slowly add different ones back in.

Edit: When you come online, start a character on the Brandywine server, and add Ealina as a friend. Send me a tell and our kinship will give you a hand with your quests.

There are going to be some changes in battling with Mirkwood, though it looks like bigger PvE and not PvP. LOTRO is much more PvE oriented than a lot of other MMOs. I think Guild Wars does a lot better at PvP for instance.
