I really need some help in Act I

I am on Lucre Island. I know the next thing i need to do is get the prosthetic hand from Dave. I have done everything else before this. I used the music box, then i walked over to the basket. For some reason, Guybrush won't pick it up. He says that they're like falling apart. By the way, what it says when i try to pick it up is "basket of law-quality hands and hooks" i've tried many times. would someone please help me!
