Episode I - 10 Years in Retrospect
On May 19, 1999 AD, the most anticipated film of all time was released in theaters. This movie was Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace, a prequel to the rest of the Star Wars trilogy, The Phantom Menace takes place 37 years prior to the events in A New Hope. Now we celebrate 10 years since the revival of the Star Wars film saga, and 10 years since the release of Episode I. Feel free to share your EP1 stories, thoughts on the movie, the hype, and whether or not you remember the day it came out in theaters or not. I personally do not recall the day that EP1 came out, since I was like 8, but I wish I did. One thing I do remember though is all the merchandise for the film. I kind of got the idea to make this thread because I watched Fanboys yesterday (September 8, 2009 AD). So cheers to 10 years to Episode I, and cheers to you, the fans and readers. Please, feel free to reply.

Yeah, Phantom Menace was a life changing movie. I remember watching this movie on the theater and I was blown out with the effects, the sound and all the action from the pod race to the battle on space and the fight between Qui-gon, Obi-Wan and Darth Maul. Phantom Menace will always be one of my favorites.

The Phantom Menace got me into Star Wars, when my nephew took me to the movies to see it. I was 10, and I hadn't heard of Darth Vader before. Next thing I knew, Darth Maul lightsabers were lying on the floor of my room.

I can remember not caring about watching it, when I first heard about it. I was thinking it wasn't going to be near as good as the orignal Star Wars movies.
But then I saw a trailer with Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn) in it, and that changed my mind instantly. Because I new any movie with him in it was worth watching, and it still is to this very day.

I rewatched this recently; it hasn't held up as badly as might be feared, but equally well it hasn't held up too brilliantly, either. Jar-Jar and Anikin are still gratingly annoying, Darth Maul is still a glorified publicity stunt, and the CGI is still over-relied-upon. On reflection, I think AotC is probably the best of the prequels.

Definitely one of the most disappointing films of all time.
Shame on you, George Lucas. How I wish that you had just left Star Wars alone instead of undermining and ultimately ruining it like you did.

A nice adventure for my younger years, but for me to enjoy watching it today I need to force myself to not view it as Star Wars and some other movie series...

I think that the last 45 or so minutes of that film rescued it from being a big disappointment. That Anakin-Padme romance was PAINFULLY awkward.

horrible film imo.
i remember i wanted to see this movie bad.
i was 15 years old and a HUGE starwars fan but this movie was so unbelievable dissapointing.
JAR-JAR, Anikin and those droids came straight out of a disney movie and the jokes where funny for a 8 year old.
Darth maul was great however as was qui gon jin
