Creating a phaser

I want to know if it is possible to create a phaser model for k1 & k2, the shape is pretty straight forward but how would you create the long beam emitted from the phaser when fired?

Has this been done before? if so where can i find it?

try using the flamethrower animation I'm sure with a little tinkering it'll be what your looking for
