I assume that you have your ModTools installed. How experienced are you with them? Have you, for example, created a custom side?
Most importantly, have you read "Getting Started.doc" in the documentation folder?

Some people might read side as "Team." CIS, Republic, Rebels, and Empire are all sides. The units in them are what comprise the sides. You can make custom sides out of custom units (with custom skins).
I recommend that you read Getting Started.doc. If you have any trouble, you can either ask here or at GameToast. I can usually help out with simple issues.

Again, I have to emphasize that you read that Getting Started document. It explains all of the basics. Changing guns is done in the Object Definition Files, or ODF's. If you only change the appearance of the gun, such as the model used, it won't affect online compatibility. However, if you change values that would affect other people, like the damage, it would break online compatibility.
You can see your skin the way it would look on the 3D model by using The SWBF MSH Viewer. MSH files are just the model used.

You can't mod without the ModTools. If you intend to actually change the skins, you have to use them. You can actually install the tools onto a flash drive if you have to.

Nah. ZeroEditor is only used for making the maps themselves. You're just dealing with the sides.

I don't think that the ModTools installation file would put you over that, but it'd take up a good half of it. That's really up to you.
