I always thought they should have been lovers it would make a good ending for the movie as well.

Although the EU has little bearing on it, if they were lovers instead of brother/sister, we wouldn't have had Luke and Mara, or Han and Leia, and, by extension, Ben Skywalker and the Solo children (alright, one of them we could do without. You know who you are!)
