I'll have to buy it when I get home, just for the fun. I watched a game play vid, and it looked pretty much the same, with just a few changes for the interface. All the models, textures, sounds and cinemas didn't seem any different, from what I could see.

So, if this sells well, will there be a TSL iPad later?

Hmm, does this use a modified Aurora engine, or something else? Was it released by BioWare? This is definitely an interesting development. You all have no idea how long I've been waiting for this, is it coming for android as well?

I can confirm the folder structure (including override), minus the save games, is the same. (My iPad is jailbroken, so I have root access) About to test if this means mods will work.

Not sure if it was the resolution or just the mod itself, but the head skin I tried didn't work. (The skin made the head solid black, instead how the mod normally looks with the PC version.) Not sure if this is indicative of all mods or not; or perhaps it's isolated to skin mods not working properly.

a couple things you could try is using the nwn dds tool (dont remember where to get it but you can google it) and seeing if the game accepts dds, if not you could theoritically copy the directory to your pc, point kotor tool to it and see if you can open the bif's, i dont have an ipad, but i have been able to open xbox files that way. maybe i should consider getting one ( im an android fan, apple and me have issues lol, but it looks like kotor might be the reconcilliation i have needed all these years)

Just found out about this. How peculiar!

When I consider it, yeah, KotOR's UI and gameplay would be very well suited to a touch screen screen interface. Except maybe the movement.

I wonder if they made any changes/updates to the game to reflect modern gameplay standards (eg, better inventory sorting)?

I also wonder if they created high resolution cutscenes for this port.. because the idea of the original 640x272 FMV's on the iPad 4's 20481536 screen doesn't paint a pretty picture... (badum-tisshh)


Hopefully this port should reinvigorate interest in the grand old game.

I tried modifying the swkotor.INI file (using ifunbox) to add back the missing shadows and grass, and also increase the resolution (which is set on 1024x768 with 2x aa) but so far the game doesn't seem to be responding to INI changes like the PC version did, and resets the file everytime the app is run. Not to mention the INI file already shows that shadows and grass are enabled...

It's quite possible that iPad graphics won't run shadows or grass. I know for a fact that intel integrated graphics are useless for grass, and I doubt that the iPad has better graphics (although I know very little about iPad internals.)

Perhaps, though many modern ios games have great shadows. However those games are using an optimized mobile ue3 or unity engine, while this is just a straight port of a pc engine

If the latest iPad can run the likes of Infinity Blade 2, surely it can render a few blades of grass in dear old KotOR..

As Bokishi says, those games weren't made with a 10 year old, non iOS optimized, engine. I could be wrong, that's just my thoughts.

They're not. Same old cut-scenes, unfortunately (though that does give me an idea).

Installed it last night, just got off the Endar Spire. dat nostalgia

Gameplay is nice and familiar, though the touch controls take some getting used to. The old save function seems a bit clunky on a device like the iPad, where multitasking is constant, and most games autosave every five seconds.*hyperbole*

Regardless of modability (even on Jailbroken devices, such as my own), this port ought to be enough to engage hardcore KotOR fans in a perpetual nerdgasm.

That being said, back to iKotOR...

Modders you may be intrested in this everyone else carry on with your life:

I thought I would update you guys from a modding perspective as I have been playing with this and extracting some of the files I will go through by folder:

Data: this folder contains all the .2da files on kotor tool. On the ipad they are saved as .bzf I do not know of any ipad application that can open this file format. Contains everything we would normally find in bifs in KotorTool.

Lips: same thing as on PC. All the files are .mod cannot be opened on ipad.

Modules: same thing as on PC. Can be opened and edited with a hex editor ipad contains a native hex editor. Either use the command counsel or ifile to edit them.

Movies: same as PC ipad cannot natively open .bik files. Good luck with that.

Override: contains all of the menu .tga's also contains all of the .gui files. Ipad can natively open .tga simply use ifile or command counsel

Rims: exact same as PC. Can be opened with iPads native hex editor. Good luck making any sense of it though.

SC.info: I'm not 100% sure on this file. I cannot find a way to open it except SQ_lite3 says its encrypted and if it was decrypted it could be opened.

Stream music, stream sounds, stream waves: all the exact same as PC except ipad can't natively play .wav dap good luck with that one.

Texture packs: can be opened with image viewer except it will crash the file system you are using as at attempts to render every single .tga at the same time.

At the end there is MANY .frag and .vert files they may be useful to someone I don't even know what they are. I cannot find a way to open them.

From my point of view there is nothing special here for modders it is a very fun game and I have got a chance to play it on the Ipad and I would say its well worth it.

IMPORTANT FOR RESKINS: reskins DO work but the iPads native unzipper currupts .tga files while unzipping them. You must download a reskin not in a .Zip or transfer it from your computer to get it to work.

Interesting! Have you found a way to get the game to respond to ini changes, or mod shadows back in? The graphics in this port are hardly doing this game justice, especially the water on manaan

I had to download this the other day. Saw it running on a co-workers ipad and I was sold. Controls are pretty. Turning around can be awkward and the as others have pointed out the graphics are not as good as a highend PC from 2004.

Now if i could just figure out this jail breaking thing, I would love to try and get my old mods installed.

I have not yet found out how to get the game to respond to .ini changes I believe .ini is not read by the ipad though. The setting for shadows are most likey saved within the tmp folder. Although I can't confirm that at the moment.
