i worked as a teller at wells fargo for a couple months before quitting to work at a warehouse for just above minimum wage, quit that job to go back to walmart for a week before going to basic training, came back continued to work at walmart til i deployed, almost been without work for a year. it's hard not having a car, so many opportunities now for jobs i can't make it to because no transportation to get there. or if i could get there via bus, except for the fact that the bus stops running at a certain hour. guess i'll be waiting until january the earlier or may the latest to get a job...waiting for that Post 9/11 GI Bill money to start flowing in again, gonna get a cheap car out of pocket, no payments (hard to get a loan when one has no job) and go look for part time second shift work. those are my current plans now....

Speaking of cars: The rental I got down here is a fresh off the line Jeep Cherokee... 10 miles on the clock. I'm the first person to soil it with my greasy paws and butt sweat.

Funeral is on Tuesday. I'm still working on tying up all the loose ends... and there are a lot. I want to fly out Tuesday night, so I don't kill all my time off.

I had a sheriff come out and catalog and unload all of dad's guns. (Though I never located the .45 I know he has...) I was going to have him take them to the dept., but he wanted to buy several of them, but couldn't since he was on duty. And they'd have to be melted down if he took them back to the office. I have his number so that when he's off this weekend, he can come get them. Anything he gives me for them will be appreciated. I just don't have the time to do the research and put them up fore sale properly. If it covers the plane tickets and rental car it would be a plus.

A few of them are classics, apparently, and in excellent shape. But I just don't have the time to deal with the other pressing problems I'm facing, let alone gun selling.

I have to get control of my father's accounts before I go, or this entire thing is going to fall completely apart. And I'd love to get the ball rolling on getting the trailer emptied, cleaned, repaired, and sold. And we're still trying to figure out what to do with the cars...

And how I'm going to get guitars and amps back to Boston...

Ugh... Overwhelmed.

pretty freaking sweet how this app works alongside the console game.

You guys are welcome to them, provided you can get to Southern Florida in the next couple of days.

He tells me there are more in the trailer somewhere... buried under a trapdoor in the floor of the back room that's currently piled with junk. All the WWII vintage stuff he has is there... and a locker full of ammo. I found 2 revolvers, a target pistol, a 22 rifle with a scope, a shotgun, and ammo for all of the above. Plus a couple of hunting knives. The sheriff was seriously impressed with the revolvers and the shotgun.

I'll take pics if I have time.

Sadly, I can't get down to S. Florida in any reasonable amount of time. Lack of funds and a way to transport such things back up to Rochester make it not feasable.

Wish I could help. Sad to see such treasures go to the smelter to be destroyed.

Dammit!

Along with a good knife or sword. I really want a rifle so I can go hunting. usually people get them handed down from parents. my Dad never bothered with weapons after leaving the army. We had a motto in our household that if we needed a gun in the house to feel safe, we would move.

Spent my childhood with the door of the house unlocked, and our car doors unlocked to

He said WW2 stuff. That means Colt 1911...that means Walther, Browning and Luger. That means Arisaka and Thompson. I am actually drooling.

You know my passion is for the edged blade...but bang toys are freaking sweet. I just like to take them out to an open field and blast the hell out of whatever, no thoughts of hurting people at all. They are just good, clean old-fashioned fun.

And they simply don't make them like that anymore.

Dangit, Ed, please don't let the cops melt that stuff down. Sell it to a pawn shop, so collectors like me can get a chance to appreciate them. It will take a bit of time, but it will be time well paid for when you walk out.

(Experienced collector's note. The larger, more successful pawn shops will pay a better price, because they rely more on their reputation, and aren't as 'hungry' as the small dive places. A fair price for you is 50% of what the dealer can sell it for; if he wants to give you $200 for a $1000 Luger, give him the finger and go to the next one.)

Yeah, anything the cop I was dealing with doesn't buy, I'll bring to a gun shop or pawn place. The thing about this area: there is absolutely no shortage of either of those around here. The idea of some horribleness happening with one if these weapons after it leaves my hands and falls into the hands of some meth zombie down here was my sole motivation for not doing that in the first place. But now that they are all unloaded, I don't mind driving them around and handling them.

I don't know where any of the paperwork for these are... Does that make a difference?

I am still a bit worried about the one that I saw last time I was down here and can't find now.

My dad has been back to the trailer in the last month... I hope he didn't sneak it out somewhere or move it.

i don't have any paperwork for the ones i've bought (rifles), as long as the serial numbers are on them you should be able to transfer them (they can look up serial number and see who the gun/rifle is in ownership by) without much hassle, and i take it you are your dad's power of attorney, otherwise i think your dad would have to be present during the transfer.

wish i had a car to get down there, but i don't really have any need for anymore firearms than the ones I have.

@k_k: what are you looking to hunt? I've got a remington 710...sadly, I haven't fired it in about 3 years...i took out my first deer with it. it's a bolt-action. also before you go buy a rifle, check on your state laws on what you can hunt with...in PA they won't let us use semi-automatics to hunt.

Post Packing

I looked up the gun laws in Florida, and it looks like you're in a pretty free area where the laws are concerned. You don't need any kind of registration or paperwork, you just have to not be a felon, wife beater or general meth zombie to legally own them.

You shouldn't worry about meth zombies getting ahold of your guns if you drop them off at the pawn shop. When those guys go into one, it's to sell their mother's jewelry, not buy an expensive gun. One is subjected to a background search when one attempts to buy a gun over the counter, and they usually can't pass one.

i finally called and made the appointment for a mental health consult at the VA hospital at the beginning of next month. let's see what they make of me. thanks everyone here for your support in actually going there for help...i know one or two of you may have referred me, another friend referred me and my team leader referred me, so might as well go and see what happens, if i can be fixed or if i'm beyond anybody's help lol

this casino must be desperate looking for people...i'm gonna give it a shot. they called me again and said there's other openings like for surveillance, which is what i would be more interested in. just watching people and getting paid for it. hell yeah. i just need my mom to give me a ride there to the interview, then i need to go get myself a vehicle if i get the job. tho i need to get one anyway so i dont have my mom be driving me to interviews...lol

in wisconsin you really only cannot use machine guns, silencers (flash suppressors), and shortened barrels. There are a lot of hunters here in WI

Thumbs up Happiness is a warm gun

Good for you, R15. What you're really doing is starting the journey to happiness.

I think you have to have a license to own machine guns, anywhere in the US. It's federal.

However, in my experience, the 'full auto' position on the fire selector should be relabeled 'waste ammo.'

*happiness is belt-fed

haha true, though they're starting to issue the revised M4 carbine with a full-auto, it has a heavier barrel so it could take the recoil without affecting accuracy i guess.

Happy Birthday Ed!

Rocker shuffle

Rearranged my living room. Crappy Chinese slide rocker gone, antique rocker brought out...DVDs closer to the teevee. Yard swords now in stand on top of teevee.

Quit laughing at my aquarium style teevee. I ain't buying a new one until the old one finally quits working. And JVC made some really good sh*t.

Almost all of my DVDs now categorized. The left stand is science fiction arranged by BSG, Star Trek, Star Wars then the rest alphabetically. The bottom shelf is samurai type slasher flicks. The right stand is anime on the top shelf, historical fiction arranged by date (naturally starting with LOTR back in the mists of legend) and Highlander on the bottom shelf. The humor movies, and my mother's movies are on another stand farther away...

OCD? Nah...just particular about my movies.

geez, zoom...you could make the Game of Thrones style throne with all those swords you've got!

I have my interview at the casino on Tuesday, it's for a surveillance position. I hope I land the job...asking for $12/an hour.

I did it already on FB, but happy b-day Ed!

Should I catalog my bowling ball collection? I'll go in order acquired.

Brunswick Custom LTD (old rubber ball; no longer fits my hand)
AMF Gold Angle (old urethane ball; like first ball, no longer fits my hand)
Brunswick T-Zone Red/Black/Gold (plastic spare ball, and the only non-Storm ball I'm currently using)
Storm Hy-Road (thinking of retiring, but considering my options for reviving the cover)
Storm Fast (the ball I've had my best scores with)
Storm Reign of Fire
Storm Tropical Breeze Black/Teal (solid version of ball)
Storm Virtual Gravity Nano
Storm Marvel Pearl
Storm IQ Tour Fusion

I'm trying, Ike... at least with the guitars.

The guns...? Well... I'd like to see them go to someone who is going to treat them with the respect and care they deserve. Selling them to a sheriff's deputy makes me happy in that regard... even if I don't get the absolute top dollar for them, they are going to a law man (for whatever it's worth...)

I KNOW what the guitars are worth, and who they are worth that to.

Looks like I may have someone willing to drive them up to Boston for me for a reasonable fee. Once they are home, everything else will get easier.

Cool Guy Bar stool

But what's under door number two? Let's get to the WW2 stuff...

Wildstar, what are bowling balls made of? The last time I threw one was 1985, but it seems to me that they were made out of stone, or something very close to it. You mention plastic balls; is that something new?

Yes, 'twas my b-day (properly pronounced bidet...)

It was one of the longest days of my life to date as well.

The hatch is in his back room... which every square inch is PACKED floor-to-ceiling with... stuff. I don't even know what. Ever see "American Pickers" where these guys go to some old barn in the backwoods to look for antiques? And they get there and it's so jammed that they have to climb over piles to get at stuff... well, it's very much like that, though I think I've already dug out the most valuable stuff already. (Funny thing: That's his favorite show...)

I can't move enough of it to clear the floor to search for this hatch.

This weekend maybe... If I can get to the screen door, I can move it out into the yard to start organizing...

Though maybe not today... after yesterday I think I'm very, very close to my limit... I was on the verge of tears by the time I got back to my hotel last night... I'm hitting my wall. I think I need to take a "me" day today before I have a breakdown...

Oh... and that back room? Completely un-airconditioned or unventilated and uninsulated... so when the sun hits the roof and comes through the windows it gets into the high 90's or low 100s with typical Florida humidity to boot... (As close to 100% as you can get without it raining inside...)

There's about a less-than 20 minute window where you can move around in there without dying. Like the guys at Chernobyl...

I just got back from Chicago. Nice city. Wonderful architecture in a lot of those buildings.

Sold all the guns to the deputy... $700 for the lot. He was thrilled! I'm sure I could have gotten a LOT more shopping them around (he told me as much...) But this way I have peace of mind, which is priceless. His family are avid gun collectors, so they will cherish and respect them.

And now I have a friendly contact in the Palm Beach PD... so if I ever need anything resolved down here for my dad...
He also said he will take whatever else we find, and pay whatever he can for them.

I'll sleep better tonight.

Thumbs up Old stuff

Sounds good about the guns, Ed. Right to the next collector, and no middle man. Plus, good karma where it might be useful. I like your style.

Can we at least get a picture of the WW2 stuff if and when it's unearthed? My curiosity is piqued...

I recently had an experience like your deputy friend. My neighbor was helping her landlord clean out his old family home, and they came across two old bayonets missing their scabbards. I identified them as pre-WW2 Swiss pioneer bayonets...very scarce, because their wicked-looking saw backs, intended for cutting wood in the creation of fortifications, also caused horrific wounds when used as weapons, and they were banned worldwide. Only the antiques are legal to own, and then by collectors only; I paid $200 for the pair. It was a fair price, considering the missing scabbards.

I made one scabbard from an old but cool-looking leather coat that was starting to fall apart. I have a red suede jacket from goodwill that I'll use to make one for the other.

The mystery rifle that I found the other day turned out to be unloaded... and I've played enough Calla Dooty to recognize it immediately as an M1 carbine. That's a 30.06 I believe... The officer had never seen one, and had no idea how to operate it, so it was fortunate it was unloaded. It was missing the magazine. We'll probably find it somewhere in here. I didn't get a picture...

He wasn't interested in the hunting knives, so I'll either pack them in with the guitars, or leave them here will the stuff to be sold/ donated.

I have to figure out what to do with his fossil collection too. He was a fossil hunter in his spare time, and has a pretty impressive collection of them. He's already given or sold a bunch to museums as well.
