Tierra de los Muertos, Part VIII

Part 8 is now online!

Sorry about the javascript errors that's currently on the pages. Trying to figure out why the hell it's happening. No luck so far.

I'm getting confused with the drawing IMGs you do on this bit. this is what I think:

Mikey: The guy with the cloak
Red: The guy in the bright yellowish shirt
Number 2: The bald human (DUH)
Mr Death: The guy with the pentagonny head

But am I right?

Nope. Pretty much wrong.

Death: Guy in the big black cloak with a cracked skull
Mikey: Guy in the bright yellow suit
Red: Guy with pentagon head and red suit
Number Two: He's the human, yeah.

I guess Radio Series are petty much your forte, huh? If not, I'm making one for me and my other GF-Fan friends, but will it be competitive to put it on the net when you have finished this one?

So now everyone's got the brilliant idea of making a radio series, eh?

No, go ahead. I can't dictate what you and your friends do. Tierra de los Muertos is almost finished as it is.

But yeah, radio series are my forte. It was the entire point of this website, to put the radio work that I'm doing online.

I listened to part 8 twice last night.
SO funny! I love the bitch smack sound FX
and hearing La Parca scream is funny.
I also envision those little skeleton dudes
in the Mummy Returns thinking of the head hunters.
I am happy that you will do other stuff
after this project finishes. because radio shows
are so cool.
they got me through many a boring night
when I did security one summer in an old
abandoned grain silo.
just me the pigeons
and a great case load of radio show tapes,
the Shadow was the best.
strolling through the silo tower listening to the acustics
and pigeon cooing bounce off the walls.

anyway that is why I get such a kick out of this series.

Aha

While I've enjoyed the series immensely, something always seemed off about it. Just the other day, it hit me. Narration: you don't have enough of it. You really need a the narrator to be explaining the twists and turns in the story (not just at the beginning, I mean) Personally I find it a little difficult to figure out exactly what's going on once the dialogue really gets going. Of course, there is the possibility that I'm just stupid. Actually, that's a very good possibility.

Jolly good.

That was Red and Number Two fleeing from the headhunters. Listen to it using headphones, it sounds great running from one side to the other.

It's not just you. The scene transitions are very abrubt. The trouble, I think, is that even though 8 of 12 was thinking 'radio, radio, radio' while doing this project, he actually wrote a television script--the scene transitions would make sense if you could see what's going on.

If they have a Narrator going: "and then such and such went to the library..." "and then they went onto a boat..." "and then they ended up on a beach" The story would be very very very dull. The scence rarely change frequently and he has bothered to do sound effects (such as the library echo and underder water). Most change of locations are right next door to where they were previously; it's not like they end up on the other side of the planet in a blink of an eye.
A good radio show should allow your brain to fill in the gaps, making it your own visual creation. Which this series obviously has done.

Narration doesn't have to be that crude. Listen to H2G2 sometime.

I don't think anyone is saying that the scene changes in Tierra are awful, but they can be jarring. I don't remember which part it was in, but there was the bit where Death invited Miguel, Red, and #2 onto his ship and then made them jump overboard. That was a little sudden. Something in between along the lines of our heroes were expecting to be led to the bar but were led to the plank instead would have been nice.

I can see how the scene changes can be thought of as abrupt. But you're probably all putting too much thought in it, and should just go with the flow and enjoy it while it lasts.

I can see how narration would help it, yes. But in all honesty, it isn't that type of radio show. Narration wouldn't aid it in any way. So I tried to do it with sound effects, to show the new transitions. Also by what the characters say, for example, on the ship when Death was making them walk the plank, he said 'middle of nowhere, this looks like a good spot'.

And I wasn't aiming to write a television script.

But if you're missing narration, you'll like the next radio series. It has narration. And it also gets very weird.

One of the big problems writing any story, whatever the medium, is putting yourself in the reader's/hearer's/viewer's place. Or, in other words, pretending to be just as ignorant about what's happening as they are. Or, in other other words, how much do you explain and how much is left implicit? No easy way to work that one out.

No, not really. Sound effects are generally a big help though, in dropping hints as to environments. Such as the crashing waves of the ocean, the microphone of the auditorium, or the rumble rumble rumble of the volcano (I think that technically, the sound effect is from an Earthquake though)
